A few questions about CI611...

Wed Jun 20, 2018 1:24 am

Since this crash received little media coverage compared to other crashes (specially JAL123), and despite reading official reports, i still have a series of questions about the crash sequence and how the improper repair failed:

1- Why did the existing 2m crack suddenly propagated all around the fuselage instead of just stopping at the next fuselage frame panel and letting the plane slowly depressurize, just like it happened to a couple of Southwest Flights? (i know panels are designed to allow this). Also, aloha 243 crack stopped propagating toward the floor, why not in this case?

2- When the tail separated, did the fuselage actually break into 4 pieces, like media reports and the Air Crash Investigation episode show? Because in the official report of the ASC (aviation safety council), it states: " All four engines separated from the main fuselage almost simultaneously (...), the remaining portion of the aircraft (the forward fuselage and attached wings) was intact and hit the water in a relatively flat attitude". Which one actually happened in this case?

PS: This is my first post. Sorry if my english is not good or of i approached too directly into the questions. Thanks in advance!

Your English is very good but I don’t see how anyone here could possibly know the answers. Well the answer to 1/ is self-explanatory to some extent (the answer is “because that’s what happened”). Welcome to a.net.
