Aircraft High Frequency Radio Modes

Sun Jun 17, 2018 2:56 am

On the aircraft HF Radio depicted at the link below, I know what all the modes are except SVL and SVU. I'm guessing the VL and VU parts might mean Voice Upper and Voice Lower, but I can't seem to find what the S in SVL or SVU stands for. Can someone explain the SVL and SVU modes?
Thanks.

Secure Voice Upper / Lower

Secure: fitted with a vocoder
Upper / lower: SSB lobe

From a .mil manual, I'd guess?

I don't know where the drawing originally came from, it showed up in a Google picture search. Although slightly different than this drawing, apparently some Dassault Falcon 50s had a somewhat similar HF radio head with the same modes. I'd like to know who made the Falcon 50 HF radio so I could look up some more info about it.
Thanks for the help.

Looking through old magazines, a fairly common fit for trans-Atlantic Falcon 50s was a pair of Collins 718-U5 HF radios. Widespread radio, also adopted by US mil as AN/ARC-174. I'd only expect the .mil units to have the Secure Voice though. Edit: VP-110 Secure Voice Module was the add-on.

There's a 718 fascia down this page a bit:

which matches your diagram's layout, but lacks the CW ( Morse ) and Secure Voice units and detents.

Great info -- thanks very much. I will use it to see what I can find.
Here's the picture of the HF radio I was talking about from a Falcon 50 Pilot Training Manual. Unfortunately, they didn't have much to say about it as far as make or model goes.

That looks like the later 514A-7 digital header unit for the same radio:

718-U5 manual here, split into chunks:

Table 5 in Manual 4 discusses the mode options on the various electromechanical and digital header units:

Manual 11 briefly discusses the secure voice modes.

ElBob, you must have the magic Google touch. I bet I spent at least 5 hours asking Mr Google where I could find a manual on the 718U-5 without success. Maybe he just doesn't like me. :worried:
You are quite familiar with HF radios -- did, or do, you use them?
I greatly appreciate all your help!
