How long does it take to scrap an aircraft?

Sun Jun 10, 2018 6:08 pm

I was wondering on average how long it takes to scrap an aircraft? Does the size of the aircraft, say 737 vs 747 make a big difference?

Wouldn't it depend on the amount of parts that are intended to be reused and so need to be removed carefully and documented? Some quite modern aircraft of unfashionable models (A318 is an example) are dismantled for parts that are common to other models and that would need to be done slowly to avoid damaging the parts. On the other hand a completely obsolete aircraft with minimal demand for parts, or parts that can't be reused because the paper trail that proves they are genuine and have been maintained correctly is missing, could be scrapped very quickly indeed, especially in a country with poor environmental and employee safety regulations.

Get me two sticks of dynamite, the crew from TheGrandTour, and two plastic fold out seats.

Airbus along with a scrapping company has worked on ways to dismantle aircraft in an environmentally friendly way, it takes much more time but you get more money from the scrap.

I scrapped not one, but two planes in about 100 miilseconds. A near head-on mid-collision is marvelously efficient in terms of time savings. They removed both in a couple of dump trucks, also efficient.

Somewhere there is a video of Honewe;;'s B720B being scrapped on the ramp in PHX. From start to finish, I think it was about 3 calander days.

About two seconds. Don't pull up.

I've seen it done on an ERJ, it flew in,was stripped of usable parts down to a bare tube, and stuffed into a 40 yard dumpster in less than a month. If its just scrapping then several days depending on size and what equipment you use to crush it.

I guess some materials are being recycled, others disposed according to environment laws of the country where the scrapping takes place.
