Why do they park like this at IAH?

Go to 11:00 into the video and notice the aircraft turns at a 45 degree angle when parked waiting for takeoff. IAH is the only place I have experienced this interesting setup when waiting for take off. Why? Does the tower tell the pilot to do this? Is it in some SOP manual for IAH?

That is relatively common for IAH if an aircraft isn't ready for take off or is being sequenced behind another aircraft. Turning to the 45 degree position moves the wingtip further away from the taxiway (note the yellow and black dashed line under the left wingtip before the turn).

Some other airports do this as well. I can remember doing much the same thing in the Penalty Box just west of the C Concourse at ORD, for example. Use of ORD's Penalty Box is generally for delays while waiting for a gate to open.

Yes, I noticed the yellow and black line, so the pilot is trying to keep his aircraft behind the line?

I don't remember ever being trained to do it nor remember seeing it on any charts or manuals. I watched my captains do it when I was an F/O and naturally did it myself after I became captain on the small jets. it is done to help ATC sequence takeoffs more efficiently at Runway 9 and 15L. The tower doesn't normally tell you to do it from what I remember, you just do it automatically. I could be wrong about that because it has been almost 10 years since I was IAH based on small jets. I guess the tower could instruct you to do it if they thought you were unfamiliar or they really needed it for sequencing. They could just make the end of your taxi clearance "runway9/15L hold pad" instead of "runway 9/15L". The takeoff order is usually determined by departure fix (direction of flight) not necessarily order on the taxiway. We don't do it in the widebodies I fly now.

That black and yellow line ensures wingtip clearance between aircraft in the hold pad and aircraft taxiiing past

If you park in the hold pad and leave parts of your plane hanging over the line. You’ll probably have some explaining to do if someone hits you while you’re in the hold pad.

Curious, with no guidelines to follow , how do you know how close your right main is the edge of the apron? Or do you just "know"?

You can use reference points like in the link above and/or instinct from years of flying an airplane, not unlike a big rig truck driver I'm guessing.

More likely they wanted to examine the thunderstorm, with their weather radar, to the SW which would be along their departure track.

DCA is another common airport where this takes place, especially if they are using RWY 1.

As a now retired IAH controller who stopped working in the tower about 12 years back (stayed in the TRACON) I can tell you that neither ground or local controllers would tell the pilot to park at the 45 degree angle the OP mentions. When I got there back in '84 that was just how all the pilots would do it. It sure did help with the sequencing if the first couple of flights were either not ready to go or we were getting others out first for any number of reasons, there was no blocking access to the runways.

The instructions the pilot probably received was something along the lines of "You have an EDCT time of 45 past the hours, time now 20 past. Runway 15L via NC, NE, WW pull off into the WW hold pad." The pilot taxi and just pulls into the pad and keeps the airplane inside the dashed yellow line..

In Chicago, ground will send planes to the Penalty Box, A pad, B pad, 28R pad, there's hold pads all over Chicago. When multiple planes end up in a holding pad, sometimes the controller will tell the planes in the holding pad to "tighten it up" to get more planes to fit inside the holding pad. So you'll see pilots pivot their plane inside the box and get closer together. As planes leave the holding pad, sometimes planes will move or just stay put until it's time to go. Inside the 28R pad, you won't angle at a 45, you just pull in and park straight.

Yes. There is more info in the other posts, but the goal is to keep all parts of the aircraft behind the yellow and black dashed line so that other traffic can taxi past.

And, most guys with EDCT's never reached the run-up area as we'd hold them on the ramp or parallel taxiway. So those type clearances mentioned seldom if ever happened.
