An extra set of vortilons on the 73M

Sun May 20, 2018 5:26 pm

If you look at this video of a 738 takeoff at 9:21 (https://youtu.be/5RGAS7O7B-E?t=9m21s) you can see that there are three vortilons on the outer leading edge of the 737-800. Fantastic, no news there. This is the standard configuration for the 736/7/8/9.

If you now look at this 737-8MAX takeoff at 7:24 (https://youtu.be/3dyG31-seUg?t=7m24s) you will see that there are TWO sets of three vortilons on the outboard leading edge.

Anyone know what necessitated this change?

How is the 737-800SFP equipped? That is, I'm wondering if the change came with that "package"..?

Probably the specific aerodynamics of the aircraft. The MAX being a different aircraft has different aerodynamic requirements that the 737-800.

I suppose they wanted to delay the onset of stall at the wingtips a bit more.

Not sure why it would happen earlier on the Max vs. the NG. Maybe simply because it is heavier, or maybe the aerodynamics of the scimitar winglets have something to do with it... Advanced aerodynamics might as well be black magic as far as my dumb self is concerned.
