747 Classics with 744 engines

Sat Apr 21, 2018 12:10 am

As the production line for the -200 and -300 Classic was winding down a few airframes were produced with -400 engines

How many of these were made and was there a significant improvement in performance, particularly range ?

Don't know about any other frames, but the VC-25A's are powered by CF6-80C2B1's which went on to the -400

The VC-25A is a bit of a 747-200 EVO in many ways. Glass cockpit among other things.

The VC-25A originally came out of the factory with "steam" gauges. The glass was added later as an upgrade to the cockpit.

The VC-25A has as MMO stated an after market version of a glass cockpit. Nothing special, and little more that a poor mans verdion of the 757/767, and of course no EICAS. It does have a Nav station of sorts which is kind of unique.

Some late 200s and 300s had the CF6-80C2B1, which is mechanically very similar to the B5F on the 400, where the "F" stands for FADEC. The FADEC engines had a few points better burn than the non-FADEC engines, but looked basically the same from the outside.

The first one (UTA 747-3B3 22870) appears to be CF6-50 engines. 22871 was not built. All of the others (Thai, USAF, Varig and Air India) look to be CF6-80s.
