Driverless Snowplows Are Clearing Runways In Norway

An airport in Norway has been cleared of snow by completely autonomous snowploughs, and it could help reduce airport delays.

The technology uses 4G communications and GPS to allow retrofitted machines to navigate around runways. The 5.5 metre wide vehicles are capable of clearing 357,500 square metres an hour, and can work in formation with several other snowploughs at once, further increasing their efficiency.

I bet many airports or their contracted snowplowing companies would love this to significantly labor costs. An airport is not a public street so might be a good place for autonomous snowplowing vehicles. You would still need drivers operating the plows for areas close to terminals and aircraft, but for the basic runway plowing, should work fine.

That's Leirin Airport in Valdres! Very beautiful! And very quiet these days after the only scheduled flight they had stopped flying there.

I think they just fitted an iRobot Roomba to the snowplow's controls!

Driveless snowplows are nothing new at Heathrow, 2014.

Not a driver to be seen. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Am I missing something? It's cool that we can do this, but how does this actually reduce delays? Are these plows inherently more time-efficient than when operated by people, or is it just that you don't need to keep a staff on standby?

there's going to be some "utilization" improvement in that employee breaks, biological needs are eliminated, but mostly - yes, the greatly reduced need for qualified plow drivers on standby is pretty big.

It is just like some airports are currently operated by remote towers. Less people needed for the operation.
