A question for an airline employee (interviewers preferred)

Sat Apr 07, 2018 2:12 am

This may be a silly question, or maybe it's a really good one.
I am graduating with a BS next month with a CFI and a soon to be CFII. I have a job opportunity to go fly up in the mountains, under part 61 ops; I would be taking people up for a scenic flights and have 3-5 students to myself. I also have an opportunity to stay at my current 141 flight school and build my time teaching there. It can be argued that staying at the 141 school is a 'no brainer', but then again, the mountain flying idea sounds like a lot of fun and a lot could be learned there (I am currently around 8 hrs exp. in back country). Do airlines care where you build hours? What sounds better in an interview? Thank you!

Not an interviewer but at this moment in the US as long as you have ATP or R-ATP mins and your logbook is not composed primarily of Parker time, all you need is the ability to fog a mirror and pass the ATP-CTP course to gain employment as a first officer at a regional airline.

Just don’t expect to get right to a major/lcc right off the street without spending a little time at a regional airline.

It’s probably not a big deal which you choose. If you could become a part 141 check pilot that would become a slight resume booster at the regional level but I doubt better paying Airlines would care. Unless the difference in flight hours per month is significant, I say try to head for the mountains if that’s what you really want.

Just throwing it out there, but you'll probably gain hours quicker at the 141.
