Name required on a passenger airliner?

Tue Apr 03, 2018 4:26 pm

I was at Miami International the other day when a 747 freighter took off that was painted all white without a company name/logo on it. When it comes to passenger carrying commercial airlines is it a requirement that an airliner have its company's name on it? Seems like an airline could save a lot of money in paint and fuel if their planes did not need to have a paint job and/or their logo on the aircraft.

Thanks for any responses.

Only an aircraft registration is required.

Liveries are for branding only. Colored paint is only marginally heaver than plain old white so the cost isn't really that much.

I was on an all white HiFly A343 from AKL-SYD a couple of months ago.

Operated by Air New Zealand, I'm guessing? Wet leased from HiFly to fill in for the 787s while these have their engines checked out.

Wouldn't it be operated for Air New Zealand?
I thought HiFly is ACMI.

Oops. Yes. You are correct. I seem to have had a brainfart while I wrote that. :)

There are some rules that prohibit posing as a different company/carrier. For instance all the regional operators have thier names on the airplane in much smaller print, and the ticket clearly says “(Airline Connection/express) operated by (Regional Airline)”
