You could hang the CFM56-5C engines on A321. or an A321+
( highest rated engine in the family.)
But what good is a glass daggger: More modern engines with similar thrust are available there.

But Airbus should have launched an A310-400 with the Trent 500 engines and a small stretch.
Both the A300 and A310 production lines were struggling individually. The A310 desperately needed a CASM boosting stretch and the A300 sat too close to the A330-200 which had a more modern wing and more efficient engines.
The A310-400 would have replaced both lines with a single product increasing economy of scale. The A300 and A310 had a very high commonality so combining the strong points into a single model would have made sense.
A310 was newer and would have been the best starting point. From an aerodynamic perspective it has a more modern, lighter, higher aspect ratio wing. So stretching the A310 would be easier than rewinging the A300.
This plane would have received enough orders to probably maintain production up until now. Airbus would have probably decided to re-engine this A310-400 instead of the doing the A330NEO. It would have complimented the A350 nicely.
