Slot Controlled Airports

Tue Mar 13, 2018 5:12 pm

If flight from a slot controlled airport are impacted by a natural disturbance, how are flights worked out to accommodate passengers to get them to the destination?

Let’s say a Nor’easter impacts BOS and JFK and both airports are closed or or flights are cancelled by the airline, let’s say B6 for example out of LGB. Since the airline was unable to use the slots on a schedled day can those roll into the next operational day for the airline to have multiple flights out to accommodate stranded passengers on the affected/cancelled flights on the previous day(s)?

Slots are for the assigned period for that day only - the sole intention of slots is to meter runway/airport capacity so it's not a massive traffic jam. Slots cannot roll over from day to day. Slots are simply unused if the flight is cancelled - most slot controlled airports have a small set of unallocated operations but approval from FAA must be granted before any additional operations are flown.

The slots are for scheduling purposes. If a flight is running two hours late, it doen't need to get another slot.

A different example, if an ATC imposed arrival rate is less than the number of issued slots, you go when ATC tells you. You don't need to request another slot.

It's another utility for travel waivers, where carriers waive change fees & difference in fare to rebook people into (later) available capacity.
