MD80 repeating sound in cockpit during landing.

Tue Feb 20, 2018 4:16 am

Whenever I am watching videos of cockpit landings of the MD80 or MD88 there is a consistent noise that goes off roughly every 15-20 seconds. I'm not sure if it's a glide slope indicator or not. I have attached a Youtube video which has the sound. You can hear it at 2:08, 2:25, 2:45, and so on. If any of y'all know what this is please let me know!

Stabilizer trim motion aural alerter.

It should be noted that the FO landed outside the legal touch down zone in that video.

When the stabilizer trim runs for more than 3 seconds, that is the sound it makes to alert the pilots the trim is running,

Yes, stabilizer trim motion, four years I flew the -80 and that noise never stopped

The FO did a good job and he most definitely landed within the touchdown zone

I’m not familiar with this term, “legal touchdown zone.” Please explain the legal ramifications of this landing, and why we should be noting them?

No, actually, he didn't.
But with your "expertise," I'd say you're either already an FAA employee, or should seriously consider applying.

While watching the video you can see there are spaced rectangular bars painted on the runway at 500 feet intervals starting at the runway threshold

There is a solid set of bars at 1000 feet from the threshold (fixed distance marker)
for reference

However this is not the end of the TDZ, that ends where the rectangular bars end

As you can see from the video the First Officer touched down well within the zone

If you hadn't mentioned the trim aural alerter and I just watched the video, I wouldn't have noticed the sounds, it's just a normal everyday sound. I guess I would notice if the alerter didn't sound and think something's wrong because it's silent when I should be hearing the alerter.

On most runways of the length you find airliners landing, the TDZ is 3000ft long - marked at 500 ft intervals with TDZ markings (stripes) , the 1000ft markings are the solid rectangles. Since the ILS glideslope brings you right to the 1000ft marker, most landings occur at the 1000ft - 3000ft point on the runway. As long as you touch down before the last set of stripes you've landed in the TDZ.
