Does your EFB drive an outboard display?

Mon Feb 19, 2018 9:38 pm

Some pilots gripe that they need more real estate for (simultaneous) multiple EFB displays... like having paper sheets. There are Windows-based EFBs, e.g.,
https://www.obds.aero/products/aviation ... or-windows
http://www.arconics.com/efb-eff-aerodocs/
that could support multiple displays, even pen-enabled displays, if enabled and certified. Maybe not multiple EFB displays in the cockpit, but at least during flight planning/briefing. What operators provide such EFBs that support multiple displays? Arconics cites EI as a user of its product... but nothing about multiple displays. A typical implementation would be a Windows 10 tablet with HDMI out or a USB-C port with alternate display enabled.

The outer screen on the A350 is connected to a laptop on the side of the pilots. During flight the laptop is normally stowed.

zeke, thanks for reply. Do you see any need to connect your EFB to an outboard screen in flight planning before boarding the a/c, so that you can have multiple windows easily visible (as opposed to shrinking windows to fit on a single panel)?

Does your company use the Airbus OEM mount, with wireless interface or with a laptop dock?

The only real improvement I would like to see would be the ability to display two charts A5 size on the screen next to each other, I think that is a function of our chart provider app.

The dock is a standard feature, so is the screen. The airline has it choice what it puts into the dock and runs on it (we have thinkpads). The external screen is connected by cable, and the laptop is connected by cable to the aircraft network. The aircraft networks connects to ground networks by secure means. This is a class 2 device which means the aircraft can push data to the laptop (aircraft location, mouse controls, keyboard), but the laptop cannot push data to the aircraft, pilots need to insert and data into the aircraft.

The outer screen is also connected to the aircraft network, and you can toggle between the aircraft network and the laptop.

Thanks. Single panel seems so limiting to me. When at the office, I have 3 x 30" panels. I still don't understand why tablet makers don't offer the option to use the tablet panel as a slave display. That would sell a bunch of 10"+ tablets.
