How long does it take to deboard an A319

Wed Jan 31, 2018 5:10 pm

Just wondering how long it usually takes from the point where the door opens until the last passenger left the plane for an Y156 A319 when 1 (or 2) doors are used?

Depends. Are you in PBI? Are you on fire?

I don’t know about Airbus, but Boeing says 9 minutes for a 737-800. Boeing uses 18 passengers per minute for unloading a single aisle through 1 door. Passenger loading is 12 per minute.

These numbers can be found in the ACAP

Depends if people are organised, if they want to take their sweet sweet time, or if they’re faffing about wanting to use the toilet before they go.

A new procedure where I fly is to lock the forward lav during deplaning. It works.

319's are pretty quick, you can turn them in 40 minutes or less with 145 pax.

I think that is "normal", but not very quick. AFAIK EasyJet and Ryanair are both known to have 25-30 minutes turn times for their 737-800 and A320 aircraft. Usually with two doors open and stairs...

Those two airlines are quite remarkable at how efficient and rehearsed they have their boarding procedures.
One of their tricks is to have everyone ‘boarded’ before they even start boarding. My last Ryanair flight we boarded before the aircraft had even got to the gate. What they do is board pax into a holding room ready to push on to the aircraft the second they can. Having everyone waiting in a sterile and boring room where they are just lined up makes them antsy and ready to get on the aircraft ASAP. No real wait for laggards and everyone just flows straight on, it’s great.

At Norwegisn the avg turnaround is 40 minutes which can accommodate if the aircraft is being cleaned and on pay performances, for example LGW-GOT is a 35 minute turnaround, LGW-PMI is 50 minutes.
It helps when you think about the passengers if they’re messy or if their were problems categorised with the delay codes and that is taken into consideration with turnaround times also. Arguably with a 738 but I’m just putting it out there

That depends entirely on the airport though. If facilities are there to check boarding passes and then park all the passengers in the holding room, then the likes of AF, KLM, SAS, Lufthansa, BA and so on will all do it as well. If the facilities aren't there, then not even Ryanair can do it. Remember, airlines don't own the gates.

Usually is very relative thing, but if there are no hassles three minutes is not impossible with 2 doors (even two minutes with well trained passengers).
A full 321 of a legacy airline unloads all pax in 5 minutes, taken from the shutdown of engines/unset of fasten seatbelt sign to closing the doors of the bus, with two staircases.

More than often there are some hassles and it may take tens of minutes to get everybody out. In any case the minutes spent waiting the door to open are the longest during the journey.

The correct terminology is 'deplane' :)

At G4 we give 10 mins to disembark from the in time, so it is really more like 8-9 mins from door open.

Not sure about A319. Will most definitely be quicker than a 738. I have seen full Ryanair 738's be on the ground for only 20 minutes from standstill until pushback, but I've also seen instances where boarding the same full Ryanair 738 took about 50 minutes to board (although on MAD only from jetway, no rear stairs. Was the most annoying boarding I've ever experienced, if only due to the fact that you expect two entry points and only one is in use).

Given that Easyjet has 25 minute turnaround times for their A319's even on AMS, I assume deplaning should be able to be done in around 5 minutes, even accounting for slow people, children, annoying tour groups, etc.

I timed our deplaning time for a 321 with 228 passengers and 4 infants. From the time we opened the cabin door to the last passenger off was 8 minutes using just the L1 door. as soon as the cleaners were done we boarded 225 passengers and 8 infants. We pushed off the gate in 34 minutes from the moment the cabin door was opened.

Typical deplaning for a 156 seat 319 is 10-12 minutes after block in (typically takes 1-2 minutes from block in to door open and using only the L1 door via jetbridge). That said I've seen as little as 8 minutes and as many as 18 minutes. A lot depends on the passenger makeup and carryon bag situation. Elderly or handicapped passengers and families with small children can have a profound inpact on deplaning time. One inexperienced or incompetent parent(s) can wreck your whole turn. On the flip side a load of experienced travelers without a ton of carryons can empty out iike a brothel during a police raid.
