A330/A340 MTOW question

Sun Jan 21, 2018 5:16 am

Reading the MTOW specs, I notice that there are many different weight variants, ranging from 184t to 242t (documentation here for the A330/neo, here for the A340-200/-300, and much simpler for the A340-500/-600). How does one know what the MTOW for a particular frame is, out of curiosity?

Joe public doesn’t. It listed on the airworthiness documents, and you are allowed to have more than one on the same aircraft.

Often, when new aircraft are initially certified, they are at a lower MTOW than later versions.
There are Airbus 330s with MTOW of 200 tonnes, right up to 242 MTOW. Sometimes, the Manufacturer will provide, at a hefty cost, a retrofit kit, that allows older lower gross aircraft to be upgraded to higher gross weights. Sometimes, this kit consists just of paperwork, which still costs a lot of money.

Because some of the airport and navigation fees are often based on the certified MTOW of the aircraft rather than the lower actual weight of the aircraft, some operators voluntarily decide to have a lower MTOW on their aircraft when they do do need the higher gross weight (short flights requiring little fuel). This allows them to save substantially on airport and overflight fees.

Some operators have an Opspec that allow them to change the MTOW of their aircraft by the maintenance department, specifically to save money. This is done with a maintenance entry in the logbook. So when the aircraft is going to go a long haul flight, the MTOW is increased, and when the aircraft is going to go a short haul flight the same day, the maintenance entry will lower the MTOW. Again to save money.....

Same concept on different plane. The Global Express (I’ll bet the GV, too) has an available AFM supplement for 75,000# TOGW available by Service Bulletin (SB). The SB is mostly some placards for the instrument panel and an entry in the paperwork. With it, one can operate at airports where, for various local reasons, restricted the grows weight to 75,000#. Scottsdale, AZ and Naples, FL are two airports that come to mind. Nothing really changes, but you do have a lighter ACN for pavement issues Yes, the plane’s noise characteristics barely change, but SYD does waive their nightly curfew, if the operating under the SB.

You can even have two weight variations for the same airframe. For example the A330-243 has a MTOW of 238t with a MZFW of 168t, but if you limit the MTOW to 236t you can raise the MZFW to 170t.

Or even three variations.

3 on the A359, and then you have the variable weight A330s

In my previous company, we had two MTOWs for the same A330, depending on the airports we operated to. Higher weight for long haul flights, lower weight for regional ops. No maintenance action was requided, just a list of airports in the OM, where our MTOW was declared to be lower.
