UA 767 returns to AMS due to oxygen issues- fire in gear on arrival

Sat Jan 20, 2018 3:55 am

Interesting story. A United flight from Amsterdam to Newark returned back to AMS after "a problem with the oxygen supply". Upon landing, there was a fire in the landing gear- the article says this was due to a "hard landing", but I'm not sure how that would cause a fire. Maybe it was a long landing that resulted in excessive braking?

I suspect it was an overweight landing, resulting in overheating brakes that may or may not have actually caught fire.

They can glow red and still not light up, though the thermal plugs in the wheel will fail.

Hi: Overweight Landing should be the reason. a/c’s set of brake (8ea on 767) is calculated to dissipate energy from a normal landing. On abnormal situations: overweight landing, rejected TO at TO weight, very fast turn around, “touch and Go landing trainings, i.e., amount of energy surpase that normally calculated when designed and an overtemp of 1or more brakes takes places.
There are several greases accepted to use for a brake- wheel set, with same fire resistant requierement, but, some error selecting grease or grease contamination, may provoque a wheel-brake set fire.
No all extinguishers and no water are approved for use on brake fire.

PD: During preflight, if one brake (any plane) is worn or had been deactivated, for any reasons, there are also TO weight restrictions that have to be met, in order to assure that rest of brakes will be capable to stop a/c w/o incidents. (That’s the reason for some departure delays and for some bagages that “will arrive in tomorrow flight”
Last but not least, a Brake temp indicator, paired with a overtemp warning system, help pilots to understand how hot are their brakes before starting TO run or Landing
