Probably not, but in my mind a stand is typically a parking spot located away from the terminal...but that's just the 'merican in me.

I imagine it's up to airport semantics, but to me "gate" usually involves a jetway where a "stand" involves another method of accessing the terminal.

I'm sure there are examples to the contrary of both statements I just made. There are many airports with "bus gates", where the aircraft is located at a "stand".

As I said, I guess it's up to the terminology used in each location or by specific people.

From what I can tell, 'gate' is used from the passenger standpoint and 'stand' is used from the aircraft ops standpoint. They usually directly coincide.

Indeed. Except where it is a remote stand, in which case pax go to a gate where they board a bus for transfer to the stand where the aircraft is parked.

No doubt there are the usual variations of common use between regions.

Or in French "porte" or door to refer to a gate.

That’s how I would differentiate the two.

Certainly there is a difference if the captain announces

"Prepare for a gate arrival"
"Prepare for a stand arrival"

I've always thought of gate as the doorway the pax walk through and stand as where the aircraft is place.

At some of the stations where I work, they will have one flight arrive just after the other departs. Both will park at the same stand so the ramp crew doesn't have to move equipment around but they will board from adjacent gates so the pax are spread out inside. Only works with ground boarding obviously.

I just listen on the radio, prior to start-up, for what term the locals use and use it. Doesn’t much matter- stand, bay, hard stand, spot, apron, ramp, etc. ATC just wants to know where to look for you.

I've always understood the 'gate' to refer to the exit door where the ground staff check your ticket and allow you out the airport building onto the 'stand' where the aircraft is parked. In the old days it was literally the gate leading onto the airport apron and the term has stuck.
