737 MAX differences

Thu Dec 21, 2017 2:43 pm

Within the 737 MAX line, is there any way to differentiate visually among the four models? (other than the different lengths of course)

The 737-7 and 737-8 both look like they have two Type III overwing exits, but the 737-7 does have a single window with blanks fore and aft for what I assume is the AC routing. The 737-8 just has a single blanked window. The 737-9 and 737-10 will have a smaller exit door forward of the aft exit door.

APU inlet and exhaust are visually different. Split winglets. Engines of course. Many have a SATCOM dome on top.

There are two new blinking LED strobes at the rear of the fuselage near the APU exhaust similar to the 787.

The MAX is also more 'level' to the ground like the 737 classics rather than the NG that tilts forward.

The key daytime visual differences will be the tapered tail section, the chevron engine exhaust and the AT winglets (as opposed to Scimitar).

At night look for the lack of retractable landing lights fwd of the MLG (although newer NG's also look like this), as well as dual tail strobes.

Alaska has retro fitted quite a few of their older places with split winglets. I was in SEA for max training and was fooled when I saw a bunch of them. Thought they were all MAX. Instructer said they have been retro fitting them for a while now.

Most of the SATCOM atenna thee days are flush mounted. An example would be the BALL SATCOM on Trumps 757 which is slightly aft of the 1L and 2L doors, Hard to see, but its there. I think what our are looking at on the SWA 737's, is the "gate to gate" WIFI.

Low-bandwidth satcom antennas, like the Cobham HGA-7001, are low-profile (flush). To get the bandwidth needed for a plane-load of passengers, a larger antenna is needed. Most are pointing antennas that rotate in azimuth and elevation to acquire satellites. An exception are the ThinKom Falco-KU3030 antennas used with the Gogo 2Ku system. These are flat disks (one for transmit and one for receive), that only rotate about their vertical axis (for phase).

Currently, Panasonic and Row 44 (Global Eagle) have line-fit agreements for the 737. Panasonic and Row 44 use different radomes for after-market installations, but for Boeing line-fits, both have to put their antennas under the Boeing Tri-Band Radome. That is the radome you see on 737-7 MAX that just rolled out.

So are you saying that both the SATCOM and WIFI live under the same tent? What do you know about the radiation that is generated by the new SWA WIFI set up?

Forgive me for taking the thread further down this tangent, but what satellite antenna is on these jets, about 5 rows back from the over-wing exits, 3 feet above the passengerwindows?

Those are WiFi antennas. They use different systems/satellites/ antennas versus SATCOM
