Routing Of Some LAX-HNL Flights

Fri Nov 03, 2017 3:17 am

I look on flightradar24.com and have noticed that some flights leave LAX and head north up the California coast to about Monterey before turning West to Hawaii, usually HNL. When we flew to HNL two years ago, we flew west from LAX on a DL 757. What is the point of flying north then turning? There are 737 and 321 flights SEA-HNL and YVR-HNL all the time, so I don't understand what the difference is LAX-HNL. Two flights I am looking at are DL 1149 757-300 and AA 285 Airbus 321.

I've been on one of these flights before and have no explanation. My guess would be winds and/or traffic on the fixed air route.

The route via Monterey is 102nm longer and takes about 13 minutes more, if you not consider winds. Of course the winds on that day could have made this route longer route viable.

I think this graphic / wind simulation explains it nicely (set to 250hpa, because that's the usual atmospheric pressure at cruising altitude of moder airliners between 10 and 11 thousands meters):

CARST's guess of trafiic would be my explanation. There is a track system to Hawaii and most airliners will be assigned to one of the tracks. They can get saturated and occasionally you either take a ground hold or accept one that is less optimal. Winds could be a factor during the winter as the jets do migrate south, but I doubt that is the case in this instance.

Thanks for all the replies.

I don't think winds are really a factor. When I was watching last night, it was only two flights and there was a significant storm blowing into Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. I think traffic is probably a better explanation.

This is one of the published departures for LAX, and you can see the dinty transition, which according to flightaware is often the first waypoint for LAX-HNL flights, there. I'm not sure what the geography of the waypoints is, but could this be it?

The DINTY transition leaves the coast around Santa Barbara. Even STOKD isn't halfway to SFO.

It was worth investigating.
