Why do we set flight (cruise) altitude and landing altitude on the pressurization panel on overhead panel?

It's required if pressurization mode is in Auto. Cabin altitude equals field altitude on landing. Reduces crew workload.

It means the aircraft manufacturer hasn't designed the pressurization system to get the information from the flight management system computers, so your workload is increased a little bit to have to manually set the information on the overhead panel. You'll know you forgot to do something if your ears start feeling wierd on the descent.

but i would like to know why pilots set specifically cruise and landing ALT. are we basically telling the FMC what the cabin altitude or pressure should be at such altitudes. or to keep the appropriate pressure difference inside and outside?

The cruise altitude is needed so the pressurization controller can schedule the rate of climb. The landing altitude is needed for the same reason, but to schedule the descent.
