Hi everyone,
This one is for the internet via sattelite experts . From what I understand the market to provide Internet to Aircraft via Satellites is between two actors :
- Inmart Sat : Using KA Band and fewer sattelites (3 sattelites from what I understand)
- Gogo In Flight : Using KU Band and more sattelites
Do you guys know what are the advantages and disadvantages to work with Inmartsat or Gogo? (internet speed, bandwith, cost of the system to install on each aircraft, etc)

I would have to say that Inmarsat owns their satellites that provide inflight internet, but providing internet for aviation customers is only a small part of their business.
The Global Xpress internet service that is being marketed is provided by their new 4 Inmarsat-5 satellite constellation that have been launched from 2013-2015 (3 primary +1 inorbit spare)
Their previous internet offering runs off their Inmarsat-4 satellites which is still being kept in service. I remember using internet at sea from their Inmarsat-3 satellites, it was dreadfully slow. Type in a url to load a webpage - go get coffee, come back. maybe half a page has loaded, click on a hyperlink, go get more coffee... etc..
Whereas GoGo doesn;t own the satellites, instead they lease their satellites from SES, Intelsat, and utimately GoGo will their provide internet service using Inmarsat's Global Xpress off the same Inmarsat-5 satellites that Inmarsat offers their internet service.

This probably won't answer your question either but:
Flew from NRT to DFW on AA a month ago and the WiFi worked for the entire flight (above 10,000ft) . I bought it primarily to view live updates on my daughters college soccer game where she is a defender. It worked well for that just feeding that data, but the speed on other things, like web browsing, reminded me of the days of using dial-up modems. So you can send email and text messages (iPhone to iphone) but you'll probably get frustrated on web pages with heavy image structure. Pretty sure it was Gogo..but my memory is foggy.

Ka can provide higher individual bandwidth, but is vulnerable to atmospheric moisture. Right now, there is more total Ku bandwidth available than Ka, but this will change.

Also heard the KA antennas are smaller than the KU antennas, is that correct?
