IAE V2500 Engine

Thu Sep 21, 2017 9:34 pm

Living in the very south end of Orange County I am below the flight path for many Latin American arrivals to LAX. On certain nights I can hear the distinct hum of the V2500 Engine as it flies over and on certain occasions can hear sort of a sound vortex when they power up from near idle well before they are overhead. Does anyone know this sound vortex sound and is it from the fan blade design on this particular engine?

I'd wager a strong amount what you're actually hearing is the spoilers being deployed. Airbus spoiler noise is very noticeable on the ground once you recognize the sound. The sound would be especially prevalant if you happen to live under a fix that requires the pilots to slow or descend.

Looking at some RNAV STARS from the South, there's quite a few 'at or belows' on a couple of them over the area you mention.

I would agree with this. I used to live right under the SUNSS Arrival (PHX) and i always thought this was an IAE sound as well. With America West A319s and 320s I had no reason to believe it was spoilers. But ever since the US and AA mergers there are a lot of CFM variants flying around and the same noise is produced from them. I think it's Spoiler retraction..but i will say it IS often followed in quick succession by a distinct engine noise that sounds like an IAE whistle, however, I've heard the same engine whistle from CFM driven airbii too.

interesting website here

The Airbus whistle comes from those Vents on the wings.

Still, i think the noise you are talking about is generally a precursor to the whine/whistle, and I do believe its spoiler retraction!

Here's another thread on the whine
