B767-300ER conversion from Passenger to Freighter

Sun Aug 20, 2017 11:29 am

Hello everyone,

During conversion from a passenger version of a B767-300ER to a freighter one as LD2 containers are not the most common ones in the market, is there any refurbishment/change work in the cargos to make them compatible with LD3 or other format of container or the cargos are remain as they are with LD2s?

LD2 for the belly. You'd have to move up the main floor to accomodate LD3.

The 767 family can accommodate LD3s in the lower hold, but in only single file which significantly reduces the usable volume of the holds.

Usually LD2s in the lower hold and either containers or pallets in the upper deck.

It depends on what type of freight is being carried. Express package freight (think Amazon) tends to be very light and small packages, which will favor LD2s. Heavy freight operators that use pallets may have a different configuration on the lower deck. One drawback on 767 freighters is that the main deck is not powered like on 777s and 747s which can impact cargo loading.

Great, thanks for your feedbacks.

Back in the days I remember some freighters had their cargos (front and aft) full bulk (no containers). Is it an option available for the customers who convert B763ER passenger to freighter?

Full bulk on the main deck? That must have been a long time ago. Everything on the main deck must be strapped or locked in place due to weight and balance and to prevent damage to the barrier between the cargo compartment and flight deck.

Freighter operators tend to hate bulk loading the lower holds. In narrowbodies they are only used when necessary since the sorting facilities are all designed to sort containers. Bulk loading is undersirable since the main deck is all containers and pallets. It creates a challenge using carts instead of loaders.

As far as options go, freighter conversions are customized for the airline that ordered it. Many things are possible and can be negotiated. I have never seen a 767 with a lower deck cargo floor installed. I have only seen them with rollers to put on containers. If an airline wanted a cargo floor put in, it is probably possible but might be expensive
