PW2000 version on LUA 757s

Wed Aug 09, 2017 6:53 am

I used to be under the impression that all of theirs used PW2040, as opposed to Delta which mostly used PW2037. I can only tell based on the sound the engines make; the 37 is whinier and "whistles" more, whereas the 40 is a bit more quieter, if I'm correct. Though I'm confused if there's any difference at all in the design when I hear a LUA 757 sounding like it's a Delta. Maybe it's just the surrounding air conditions?

Ha!..interesting post...I am one who is pretty much obsessed with the way different engines sound... and I frankly never gave much thought to the different sound of the different variants..you are clearly one step above me in the game! ;-) I always liked how the PW2000 sounds, and find it less obtrusive in the cabin whilst flying on the 757 than my beloved RB211...but I confess I just LOVE the whine of Rollers on take off...they give me goose bumps!

I wasn't aware that there are many major differences between them, isn't it just a few changes in the core and a different software setting? None of that should change the sound much.

Ah really? I used to think since they didn't quite sound the same as Delta's (often times, again it may be other variables...) that they used a slightly different engine instead, the 2040. I'm probably just overthinking it.

Are there any known operators of the PW2040 though? I know the 757-300s use PW2043.

UPS uses the PW2040.

Could 2037 be altered into a 2040? I would think since UPS took a chunk of United 757s that they would want the extra thrust.

Delta actually has all 3 versions in their 757 fleet. They have the 2043 on the 757-300s, the 2040 on overseas 757-200s, and 2037 on the rest of the 757-200s.

Would thrust settings apply here? If the jet is taking off with a higher thrust setting, I'd assume that would affect the pitch of the sound and the whining.
