A bit of a strange question, but what exactly do these buttons do?

They display the listed maintenance pages on the lower center display while on the ground. Optionally some customers were able to display them above 10,000'. The adjacent panel allows "events" to be recorded for maintenance to display and erase after landing. Generally this panel is not used by the flight crew.

During production test flights we had access to this information throughout the flight to record data or get more inflight information relative to maintenance issues.

Hi: For instance, During flight there is an "Status Message" (or any other kind) about Air conditioning system.
When on Ground, Mx Crew will ask, pressing correspondent button for associated Mx fault message to this "Status:
With Both "Status Message" and "Mx Message" on hand, he have a Dual "Entry Point" on FIM (Fault Isolation Manual) to search for correct troubleshooting procedure and, eventually, determine what was wrong in the system and fixed.

And in our case, Air Conditioning System together with Air Bleed and Anti-Ice system's faults will be found under "ECS"

(In a side note, when working on B76,it was useful a B767 App for faults, "B767 EICAS". I repeat, it helps, but do not substitute Boeing Manual. In fact it explain what every message means, level and Fault Code, (used to search on FIM)
I recommend it as a complement.
