Different door configs

Thu Jul 20, 2017 5:35 pm

I know there are many airplanes that can have different door configs - you can get the 333 with a small or large door at L3/R3, the 739 just has 4 non iverwonf exits but the ER has 6, but my question is about the 752 and 763. Some 752s, such as many in the US have two overwing exits but some, like many in europe have a small door behind the wing instead. So what are the benefits to each config? And it's the same question with the 763. Some have no overwing exits with two big doors in front and a small and a big door behind the wing. Some have just a big door at the front and back and two overwings. And a few have two big doors on front of the Wong, one overwing and then the one at the back. What is the difference in each one? Which offers the best floor space vs which offers the highest seat count? Thanks!

All come down to customer options really. Air NZ, for example, had the 767 version with just overwing exits and the 4 main doors front/back, this layout gives the most floor space at the expense of max passenger load. For other airlines, quicker boarding/deboarding meant they were better off with the version that has two full doors fwd of the wing. Local regulations in the country may also factor in the layout. The small vs large door on the A330 allows more or less seats as the large door is dual-lane (2 people at once). So for a LCC that wants to pack in 400 people, they need this option. Some airlines may choose certain options based on resale value as well, even if in their layout the option was not strictly necessary. Leasing companies also have some say in what config the planes are made.

The bigger doors take up more space, but offer higher exit limits, so premium heavy carriers tend to get the smaller doors to maximize floor space, while charter carriers get the larger doors so they can cram in more seats.
