Boeing Line Number vs MSN

Fri Jul 07, 2017 3:43 pm

Can anybody explain why the Boeing Line Number is not the same as the MSN #.

The flight deck registration placards on our Boeing fleet include a Line number and the MSN. What is the difference and why shouldn't they be the same. Airbus only refer to the MSN.

The Boeing line number and Airbus MSN apply to a specific airplane type and are both related to the number built i.e. line number. Airbus is a little different in that they occasionally skip line numbers (A380).

The Boeing MSN includes all aircraft types so for 3 consecutive MSN's you could have 3 787's or 1 787, 1 777 and 1 737. The first 727 was Serial #18293, the first 737NG was #27841, and the first 787 for ANA was #34485. Don't know how the serial number is determined and some are skipped.
