Cost of painting / A330 "Hello Kitty" Eva Air

Mon Jul 03, 2017 5:19 am

Hi everyone,

Was on connecting flight when I saw the "Hello Kitty" A330.
Does any have roughly an idea how much it cost to do such painting ?

How long they need to ground the acft for a such job ?

Thanks,

Very intricate paint schemes often use decals (stickers) rather than paint.

But stickers can stand such long time on the plane?

No, that's why you often see them falling off at the end of their life span.

As for the time it takes, about 7 days for stripping and repainting of a 737.

The BR Sanrio aircraft are done with decals. There are photos on the database of the aircraft departing TLS where the fuselage is plain white with only the (modified) BR titles.

It takes about 5 days to apply the Hello Kitty decals. Here's a video that shows the process:

Unlike the A330 where they used decals the 777 got a real paint job:

EVA does all paint jobs now, no more decals.

New livery paintings:

They put these massive outlines over the fuselage then paint the areas the color specified before covering that area up and moving on to the next area. Very time consuming, these jets normally are out of service for 1 month so they can paint/do regular mx. The last aircraft that was painted(B-16207) spent a month and a half on the ground.

It seems like the opportunity cost of having a plane down that long would far outweigh the increased revenue from ads/publicity. Does this end up being economical for EVA? How does the special livery recoup the costs?

It does. Some people fork out extra just to experience the Hello Kitty jet/service and onboard duty free sales are extremely good. It also attracts the local Taiwan market, they seem to have some loving for these little girl things even when they are adults... The Chairman and CEO(Both old and new) all have said these jets bring in more revenue compared to a flight on the same route without these liveries.

My guess is that, whatever the out-of-service, paint, and return to service costs to the airline: I'll bet it was probably negligible compared to the cost of actually licensing "Hello Kitty" from Sanrio.
