Why did Shanghai airlines retire the 757?

I just read that Shanghai airlines got rid of their 757 fleet. How could they! Especially when they were the people to receive the last 757 ever made! What's gonna happen to that one? Anyway, what were their reason(s) for retiring them?

Could it be the high weights, high fuel consumption, difficulty finding spares, and relatively small 757 fleet in that part of the world? How about the fact that the youngest 757 is coming up on two decades old at this point?

You are likely 100% right, except that the youngest 757 is only approaching 13years, however Shanghai withdrew this frame and the other 2004/5 builds a while ago and they now fly at Delta.

Difficulties to find spares generates AOGs for so many stupid reason sometimes. At the end they probably made their calculation on top of the other reasons mentionned earlier and decide to get ride of them

What happened to the last 757 frame? Was it scrapped or converted into a freighter?

Doc"s analysis, other than a minor age correction, is spot on.

The 757 has a higher CASM unless depreciated. Even then, the 739ER and in particular the A321 have much lower per seat costs.

The 752s very long range wasn't required, so that wasn't of value. Better to sell to an interested party.

Lightsaber

Anything that occurred between 2000 and 2005 was 20 years ago. ;)

By contrast, 1990 was only ten years ago.

It, along with the other four late-build Shanghai 757s, is flying in passenger service for Delta.

You're quite wrong. Anything from 2000-2005, including the manufacture of the last 757, was "last week."
Beyond that, it's "a couple years back."

They were the only birds in Mainland China using PW2037 engines (all other 757s are RR powered) so spare is an issue. And I've heard that the last bird, B-2876, was a hanger queen.

Also coincides with simplifying their fleet. Mind you FM is also retiring its 767 fleet from next month, so this would leave them with 737 and 330s (which spare parts and resources etc. can obviously be shared between MU and FM).

If only that logic worked, we'd still be in the golden age of Disco, as 1980 would be "today"... the monstrous orchestrations, interweaving intricate arrangements adoring beautiful melodies crowned by luscious vocals bepeaking the cultural and intellectual apex of our civilization - the 1970s, with disco at it’s pinnacle. Plus, we were flying 747-100s/200s and 707s and DC-8s... ugh. I missed out. c'est la vie.

So, moral of the story, kiddos? Go ride on a 757 before the only place you'll see one is in a museum. That time is coming... sooner than later. Shanghai Airlines got rid of them for the reasons everyone eventually will. They'll get a better cookie cutter for their needs. My guess is the last users of the 757 will be the American operators who utilize them for TATL, Icelandair... again, TATL. And when the A321NeoLR comes along, that'll be the death sentence for the 757...

So, you're saying Boeing could restart production tomorrow, eh?

As I recall they bought the 757 for it's high and hot performance not range. The 737-700 and 737-800 with the short field performance package can handle those routes. Also the 737-8 Max should be able to handle those routes too. All those planes could handle hot and high issues at lower capital and operating costs. It makes sense to sell off the 757's to and airline that actually can use the range and and has the capability of maintaining indefinitely.

I wish they could. I just don't see how that could hurt the company if they resumed production. If they could maybe produce it for 8-10 more years, (that is if the supposed 797 is a successful).
