Some scans of old aero charts

Thu Jun 29, 2017 6:17 pm

Starting with a 1946 New York Local chart-- the scans aren't all perfect, but there's enough overlap so everything is covered on one scan or another. Click on a page and you get a preview-- to see the sharp scan you have to download the page.

Back of this chart is blank-- wonder if this is a first edition. Note the pencil "sp" notes in the margin, pointing out spelling errors.

More to come.

In 1953 the legend and some airport data was on the back of the chart

Note that La Guardia's radio range has moved to NE of the field-- was SW of it in 1946.

More to come.

Thanks Tim! I've been attempting to find an old 1950s Los Angeles Sectional for some time. Looking at the chart I can see LAX had 8,500 feet of runway back then, undoubtably after the Sepulveda underpass was constructed. This chart also shows a fan marker at "La Habra" intersection which is mentioned in a American Airlines video regarding a transcontinental DC-7 flight. It's interesting that ATC was still giving clearances in the mid-fifties using low-frequency airways even after the VORTACs were installed.

Two sectionals--

LA 1949

NY 1949

https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/7fa ... 204a1c0c74

Both charts still show some remaining airway beacons. In 1949 the beacon airway out of Los Angeles was via Newhall-- on the 1932 sectional at the NOAA site the LA-Salt Lake airway was via Cajon Pass.

As I recall there were several lighted airways in existence between Dagget and either LAS or BLD as recently as the mid 60's?

Actual "lighted airways"-- long strings of beacons 10-20 miles apart-- were mostly (all?) gone by the middle 1950s. Beacons remained here and there.

It seems airway beacons weren't like the ones at airports-- they had a 1000-watt bulb and a reflector, so the (white?) beam was one-way.

No, it seems airway beacons were one-beam originally, but later airway beacons were two-way.

New link for the Denver 1945 sectional, with more overlap in the scans
