TRACON talk

Thu Jun 22, 2017 9:00 am

In conversation with a Boston-area relative (we both grew up in Boston, see), I was "mimicking" ATC talk and included the phrase "Boston Approach."

"Hello!" she said to me, "It's 'LOGAN Approach.'"

"No it's not; it's 'Boston approach.'"

"The airport is called 'Logan Airport,'" she evidently thought necessary to say out loud to a guy who was born and raised in Boston. And after we fought about that, my volley ended with, "...because Logan doesn't have its own TRACON. Logan is on the Consolidated Boston TRACON." I was recalling something I'd read years earlier and for all I know might not even be true anymore (if it even was when I read it :boggled: ).

Well my forceful inflection and use of recondite jargon surely shut her up, so my only concerns here are:

A) Was I right; is Logan in fact on a Consolidated Boston TRACON (and therefore pilots and controllers say "Boston Approach," not Logan)?

2) What the heck is a TRACON... :footinmouth:

1 - It's Boston Approach. Don't think it's ever been Logan Approach.

2 - Terminal Radar Approach CONtrol.

Using that logic the callsign for BOS would be Logan Tower also, which I am 99% sure it is Boston Tower. Normally all the facilities, even after they are combined (minus a couple examples) take the name of the primary airport they are serving.

And the fact that it's a Consolidated TRACON in Merrimack, NH makes little sense to be called Logan Approach considering A90 TRACON offers services not just to BOS, but MHT in addition to the many Class D Towers and satellite fields across the area.

Well yeah - even I understand that's the whole point of "consolidated."

BOS, MHT, PVD, and... Beverly, Mass? Hanscom?

Hey what about BDL... or PWM? Or BGR? Or... etc.

The BCT currently serves BOS, MHT, ASH, PSM, BED, LWM, BVY and OWD. Cape TRACON (K90), which serves HYA, FMH, ACK and MVY, will move in soon. There are no foreseeable plans to transfer the approach controls at BGR, PWM, BTV, PVD or Y90 (Yankee TRACON...BDL) to Merrimack.

The approach control for the Rhode Island area used to be at NAS Quonset, and was known as "Quonset Approach". Well after the Navy left, one of the facility chiefs decided to change the name to "Ocean Approach", which remained when the TRACON moved to TF Green. When the tower and TRACON were combined, the name was changed to "Providence Approach".
