engine shafts&bearings

Tue Jun 20, 2017 9:14 pm

Greetings,
I've used the search function but was not sucessful in my search.
in GA planes with ICE's the thrust (is that the same as force?) is transmitted through the crankshaft to the crank case to the airframe I think).
Is the transmission of forces similar in jet engines? does the shaft of a large GE engine need to transfer 120+k/LB to the airframe? if that's the case how are the bearings constructed to prevent them from being ripped apart?

Thanks
FFF

Pretty good paper here on bearing construction.

Yes absolutely. The basic thrust balance is this: pressure differential is created by the turbo machinery: this is reacted through the thrust bearings into the frames and into the pylon, producing thrust on the aircraft. Most main engine shafts have a ball bearing to react the thrust into the frame, and a roller bearing on the other end for alignment. How are they constructed: those are some large rolling elements, large races, and large frames.
