Airline History

Mon Jun 19, 2017 6:24 pm

Hi all! I'm interning at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport this summer and I was tasked with finding all of the previous airlines that have had service to the airport. It's a cool and interesting task, but I'm not really sure where to begin or where I could find this information, aside from deconstructing the big 3 and their mergers from the past 10 years. If somebody knows of a website or database that would have this information, all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Back in the day that was EA territory. Maybe there is something in their archives.

Obviously you know who currently serves GSP or has in the recent years. Prior to 1979 and deregulation, you are looking at four airlines in the Southeast that would cover that area; Delta, Eastern, Piedmont and Southern. You can follow their history and mergers from that point. Post deregulation is where it might get challenging. Many airlines started and disappeared during the 80's and 90's. Some that you might want to look at would be AirSouth, ValueJet, the original USAir, and original Airtran. Then there are the commuter airlines flying on behalf of one of the majors; ASA and Comair are two that I can think of right now. Hopes this helps.

Interesting to note that before that airport opened in 1962, Greenville and Spartanburg were separate stops. EA and SO were the two airlines serving when the airport opened.

You could do an airport search on the photo side of airliners.net and see what pictures come up.
