Powered by an auto V-8-- when? How many?

Thu Jun 08, 2017 12:41 am

When was this? What engine? Was the plane a modification of an existing design? How many were built? Is that the radiator beneath the cockpit?

It was a kit plane. Here is an ebay auction for a brochure for them - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1976-Auto-aviac ... 135?_ul=BO

It apparently used an Oldsmobile 215 CID V8. I assume it has a radiator somewhere.

The company site says "Spitfire-type wing root radiators".

In the dear dead days of my youth, I recall General Motors fitted, or had someone fit, one of those Oldsmoble V8s into some sort of standard model general aviation aircraft and flew it all over the US, showing off this then-new use of aluminum in a production V8. My fuzzy memory seems to recall something big and high-wing; probably one of the bigger Cessna single-engine planes.

Maybe it was this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpZYfd0GzuQ

There have been several V-8 powered homebuilts or modified production aircraft throughout the last 40 years. Google it.

have a look at the ORENDA OE-600. It started as the Thunder V-600 that started with the 350ci aluminum block V8.. They guys developing the engine ran out of money and sold the design to Orenda where if is today.
Their aim was to re-engine the Turbo commander and the Merlin powered by the Garret (Air research)TPE-331-3 and -5
