A350 vs NEO/MAX Noise Suppression

Mon May 22, 2017 11:09 am

I had the opportunity to witness one of QR's A350's land at GVA recently and the low level of the noise on final approach was amazing.

Will the NEO/MAX have as good noise suppression characteristics compared to the A350?

Engine noise is caused due the shearing effect caused by high velocity of the gases exiting the engine. Modern turbofans however derive thrust more from the bypass duct rather than the core. NEO/MAX engines are using bypass ratios upto 12:1. So definitely the noise emitted is less compared to older engines

The NEO/MAX would be quieter than the A350, given the bypass ratio.

I didn't notice he said during landing. :) But definitely it reduces noise by a small margin. During approach the major noise sources are Apu and deployed devices (L/G, flaps, slats).

On most A320s the loudest percieved noise for much of the approach is actually a resonance from air passing over the fuel vents.

They have reduced the noise by adding a vortex generator just forward of the fuel vent on newer built frames including the NEO.

Yes. That is why I wrote "most" for simplification.
