IFE Moving Map Crew Operations

Sat May 20, 2017 5:56 pm

I would like to get some Airline Crew Operations information regarding IFE moving map systems. In particular:
1. Does the system track the flight plan (Way point to way point) or just great circle from origin/current position to destination?
2. How does the flight plan get loaded (either Origin-destination or Way point to way point route)? Do the flight attendants load the route data or is it down loaded directly from the FMS?
3. Is time to destination supplied by the FMS or calculated by the system?
4. Assuming way points are loaded, if there is a mid flight change in routing, do the way points automatically get updated?
5. Have crews seen significantly different operation between the 787 systems and prior aircraft?
6. What type of systems are you familiar with (Rockwell Airshow, Thales, Panasonic, etc.)

Thank you for any information.

Hi, IFE it's not autonomous. It receives Position from Cockpit.
At the beginning, Start and Destination airport were selected by FA, and position was received from IRS.(No IFE Map on, till Pilots arrived and set IRS).
Nowadays, my understanding, all info is supply from FMC.

1. The moving map systems typically show the great circle from current position to destination. In other words they do not show the flight plan route. However the systems show the flown path "behind" the aircraft.
2. From the FMS.
3. Supplied by the FMS.
4. See point 1. The moving map does not see the flight plan.
5. Can't speak to the 787, but the 350 is way fancier than earlier presentations. Various views etc... However that's just presentation. The data input from the FMS is presumably the same.

Regarding data from FMC: I've already heard about cases, where a diversion was unintentionally "announced" by the moving map of the IFE, as passengers noticed, that for some reason their destination changed. In fact the pilots have activated the alternate route BEFORE informing the passengers...

That would make sense. If you're diverting, I think the first priority is initiating the diversion, not informing the passengers. :D
