Hi all,
A long time ago I saw a photo here on A.net of a Boeing 737 classic series with a PFD that had brown borders. This would imply that the PFD on that aircraft came from a 757 or 767. Is this possible? Are the PFDs on early 757 and 767 aircraft interchangeable with the PFDs on 737 classic aircraft? I also saw a photo of a 737 NG aircraft using a 737 classic FMC. Does the FAA let airlines interchange parts like this?

Yes to all of the above, but when you get into the FMC/CDU there are a lot of restriction. Obviously a 757 FMC will not work in a 737.

Interesting. So it just depends on the model but it is possible and legal to swap some components from one model onto a completely different model?

When you say "FMC" I'd assume you're referring to the keypad/screen unit. This is called the Control Display Unit (CDU) ... the actual FMC computers are located elsewhere. I've flown on fleets with different, interchangeable CDU units ... the main difference was CRT vs. LCD, but it was common to see two different versions in the same aircraft.

Oops my bad yes I am referring to the CDU! Do you have any specific examples? I'm just curious about this stuff I hope you guys don't mind!

If you think about it, a screen is a screen, so as long as it is the same part number or an approved part, there is no reason why you couldn't swap them around.

As long as the part numbers show up in the respective IPC's, there's no reason not to be able to do it.
I haven't looked at it in a long time, but there was a time when the FDR was common across our fleet (B747/B757/B767/MD11), except the A300.

Boeing uses the term FMCC in lieu of FMS so it gets confusing at times. I do not know if a FMC/CDU is interchangeable between models but I doubt it. Maybe 757 to 767 Pegasus but even that has me doubting it. There so many sub sets of these FMC/CDU that one really needs to be careful when applying this logic.

So it sounds like it's a case by case thing. Nothing is guaranteed but it is possible in some cases.
