Russian aviation manufacturing

Sat May 13, 2017 7:01 pm

I was reading an article on CNN money and this caught my attention:

But Airbus wants to simplify the process, nixing slow and expensive high-pressure ovens called autoclaves. Airbus is closely watching Russia for clues, where the country is developing its own western competitor with advanced manufacturing.

What processes does Russia use?

The Russians use cold-curing instead of autoclaves.

IMU it is not "cold cure" you still need to heat the resin to
A: turn it to low viscosity and b: start the curing process.

IMU the first big part made via resin infusion was the A340NG rear bulkhead.
( followed by same for A380 and 787..A350 ...)

If I am not mistaken, you still need to "bake" the part, right? Just not in the autoclave.

Normally you don't need to, depending on the resin used. Thermosetting resins create their own heat. Here is a link to an article on this method:

The MC-21 will feature the very first out-of-autoclave composite wing and wingbox. This is a pretty big deal. Even Boeing with the 77X has stuck to autoclave.
Out-of-autoclave offers cost advantages, as well as greater manufacturing flexibility, such as when ramping up or down. If Irkut can pull this off consistently and reliably in series production, it is a significant advantage.
