UAL 757 winglets

Thu May 04, 2017 7:18 pm

Just flew two UAL 757s on EWR-SFO (both legs). These were both PMCO 57s. I noticed that they put new winglets on these, the ones that trail off to the little point at the top, similar to the Scimitar winglets on the 737s. I was surprised that they would have gone to that trouble. I know the new Scimitar winglets are a better design than the original winglets but can they be that much more efficient to justify the work and cost of putting them on. And I assume they put these on the PMUA 57s as well?

To my knowledge, they're only currently being fitted to the sCO fleet. The decision to keep the sUA 752s beyond next year was just made a few days ago, so it's likely they'll receive them as well.

It would be interesting to see if they put them on the PW ships, but I have a feeling they won't. I wonder if DL will go for them considering they really are keeping a substantial fleet for a good number of years to come.

And then the next big question is if/when 767s get the same upgrade done.

.

1.5% more savings over a regular Blended Winglet.

Does anybody have a photo of one of these winglets on a 757?

Thanks! :) So what does this upgrade involve? Do they scrap the old winglet and put on a completely new one, or can the old winglet be converted?

Old winglets can be converted. It's much less expensive than a whole new winglet, and install time is about a day. For 1.5% reduction in fuel burn, ROI time is probably 2-3 years. There's a reason it's a popular modification.

Will DL and AA also be fitting these new winglets? How about the 757-300s at both UA and DL?
