Just doing some research on these two aircraft. Found some interesting numbers....
A3510
Length: 242ft
Wingspan: 212ft
MTOW: 679,000lb
Range: 7990nm (to possibly change with EIS)
Max Engine Thrust: 97,100lbf
B77W
Length: 242ft
Wingspan: 212ft
MTOW: 775,000lb
Range: 7370nm
MAX Engine Thrust: 115,300lbf
Ok so some numbers wise, both same length, same wingspan, around same range.
Huge difference however in MTOW and Engine Thrust!
Its also a note to take than the 77W is now around 12 years in service, and been in development for the past 20 years more than likely.
Is the A350 just then showing what a modern airliner can achieve now with modern technology and build materials? I was very impressed to see how much lighter she is compared to her competitor right now!
Its no wonder then why Boeing are pulling out the 777X if the A350 is going to be able to perform with these numbers.
Thoughts?

You sound surprised that a new generation aircraft will surpass a prior market holder + prompt a competitive response.
It's sort of a big "duh!".....

Part of the reason for the big difference in MTOW is that the operating empty weight is 155t for the A35J vs 168t on the 77W. 13t difference, with all the reduced fuel consumption, drag, smaller engines etc that that brings.

I heard from a captain on the 737 that for every 1,000 lbs of extra payload they bring, it costs an extra 100 pounds of fuel to haul it. No idea how that translates into an a350, but it gives some idea.

Apart from OEW, a big difference is the wing. The 777-300ER is a bit "underwinged" as it inherited the wing of the much lighter older variants (with the addition of raked wingtips). It is a lovely aircraft but there was a bit of brute force approach mounting massive engines to compensates. The 777-9x "corrects" this by making the wing larger, which will allow less powerful engines despite a larger aircraft.
The 350, on the other hand, has a very modern "long range cruise wing".
On the same route, in the 350we are almost always 4000-6000 feet above the triples.
