Modern Radial Engine Operators

Thu Mar 02, 2017 4:46 pm

So I have always been fascinated with the old radials, but now that I travel for work I'm surprisingly seeing them running around on revenue flights. I've seen active DC-3's in Colombia (not super surprising) but also beech 18's on the UPS ramp in San Juan. In Bishkek there is a big AN-2 graveyard and It looked like they were pulling parts off them? I know the old CL-214 are still somewhat chugging along (or at least I see them for sale on globalplanesearch) and even DC-6's in Anchorage?!

If anyone knows the names of companies operating radial engine aircraft or has any kind of insight on operating these beasts please comment. I'm here purely out of nerd-factor so if you know anything about radial engines Ill really enjoy reading about it.

Not much to add here about operators here, but a fellow radial nerd.
Haven't flown a radial myself, but pulled the prop through all 9 cylinders of an An-2 before we went for a scenic flight.

If this sound doesn't get you riled up, nothing will:

Its on my to-do list to make a sound clip and use it for my alarm clock!

Good to see another load on here.

In Australia you'll find Sydney Harbour Seaplanes operating the DeHavilland Beaver.
In Seattle you'll find Kenmore Air flying Beavers
In Canada's North you'll find Buffalo Airways flying DC3's, A C46 and others I'm sure I don't know about

Didn't Breitling still offers excursion tour with their super connies? Breitling has DC-3 too (if that qualifies as company operating radials)...
I think some CL-215 is still on operation, they're turboprop version of CL-415, major firefighting plane worldwide and a descendant from PBY Catalina.

Here in BC, Harbour Air has DHC-2s in regular service, as well as sight seeing. Seair Seaplanes, Saltspring Air, and I'm sure there are others all with beavers as well. Up in Port Hady, Pacific Coastal may still have 2 Grumman Goose in service; I haven't heard of their retirement.

If you're looking for a real rarity, I believe TransNorthern in Alaska still operates a Super DC-3 in a pax config
