What Are The Most Senior Crew Bases For Each Airline?

Thu Feb 23, 2017 6:14 pm

Someone once told me that CVG is very senior for Delta and that IAD skews senior for United because of the disproportionate amount of widebody traffic. What other pilot and FA bases are generally crewed by the most senior crews?

Pretty sure that HNL is United's most senior flight attendant base ... as in 1988 hire is the most junior! SEA and BOS are also very senior at UA. The most senior bases are generally the smaller ones as they have fewer positions and therefore much lsss likely to have open positions for transfer. I remember someone joking that at AA a position in RDU only opens up when someone dies!

Is this a technical forum question?

Not anymore for pilots. I know 2 who can't hold Captain (even a Reserve Captain) in BWI but can hold Captain in DAL and aren't on Reserve.

GUM is supposed to be a pretty senior base for UA, also.

I also think that states that do not have state income taxes would be a factor, years ago I knew an AA pilot who was based in BOS, a very senior base and he lived in southern New Hampshire and it was an easy drive to BOS. The prime reason he wanted to be based in BOS was because NH does not have a state income tax.

Obviously you have not spent much time on GUM? Pilots, and to a certain extent FA's as well "follow the time". Big airplanes pay more so that's where the pilot seniority goes. Think, SFO, JFK, LAX, ATL, DFW.. Where you choose to live is anybody's guess.

I read on here once that it was senior because of a lot of Air Mike crews from the CO days. IDR ho said that or what thread it was in, however.

Personally, I always thought it would be junior not only because of what you mentioned, but also because young people would be more apt to trying the lifestyle out in GUM before wanting to settle back in the US. What base are the 777 crews that frequent GUM based out of?

For flight attendants, DAL was for quite some time until the recent changes to the wright amendment allowed for a fair amount of growth at that base. Now its PHX for WN, based on years seniority needed to avoid the reserve bid. Again, this is FAs only. It'll be different for pilots. My understanding is that within the pilot group, the senior base for Captains isn't necessarily the senior base for FOs.

SWA must be a little unique in that the only airplane they operate is the 737, thus leaving a lot of incentives off the table.

it's a fact. the base transfer list for RDU is supposedly gigantic - given the number of AA flight attendants (on both LAA and LUS sides) that commute every single day out of RDU (and if you've ever flown through here, you've seen it), there's no way it isn't. there's only about 70 RDU based FA's
