A320 Weight Variant

Tue Dec 06, 2016 5:59 pm

I am having difficulty understanding the subject term on the A320 Aircraft. I.a.w. the Structural Repair Manual, A320's operated by the airline I work for have weight variants 008 and 012. However, structurally I have not noticed much of a difference. Could someone shed some light on this please.

I didn't think there were any structural differences. Airlines just use lower weights on paper to avoid airway charges and landing fees.

Its a numbers game to get what is typically the same airframe to carry more weight. You adjust the maintenance program accordingly to compensate.

You should see a different placard on the MLG between the WV008 and WV012, the WV012 should say the MTOW of 77,000 kg.

Most of the 77k Mtow Aircraft have the 012WV. Some of them have the 008WV. So WV simply indicates the max Mtow certified? And what are the conditions when the WV of an aircraft can change?

Got a little more information on the subject that I wish to share..
Weight Variant is defined by MTOW, MLW and MZFW.
WV parameters may have certain influence on fatigue life of structural repairs and allowable damage limits. To differentiate fleet per WV allows us to maximise allowable damage and simplify repairs. WV can be changed by incorporating SB's.
Increasing WV-Post SB WV has to be followed in the later life. Decreasing WV-Highest WV before SB has to be followed in the later life.
