Current record for aircraft with most flight hours/cycles?

Wed Nov 23, 2016 5:12 pm

I am curious if anyone knows what the current record for an aircraft with the most flight hours of any aircraft are, regardless of it it is retired/scrapped or currently flying. I figure this would be for any aircraft in general, not just within its specific model. If a definite pick or statistic isn't available, it could be interesting what many best guesses are.

I tried looking around, and this post from 2006:
viewtopic.php?t=391663
seemed to be the closest bet, but I do wonder if it may have changed by now.

My first guess for cycles would be one of those low-bypass 737's or a pre-400 747 in various niche operations. For flight hours, maybe a DC-10 that got assimilated by one of the shipping companies?

Hawaiian took a DC-9 to 95k cycles.

I would guess a LH 744 for hours.

Although, with the ability to rebuild a DC-3 to zero cycles...

the MD-10 that crashed at FLL had 44 years, so that had to be a lot of cycles, same withe the other DC/MD-10s

Believe KLM will take the 742 and 744.Believe 742's PH-BUI and PH-BUH, which then went to Southern Air(N746SA and N748SA) were both retired at right around 135,000hrs. Some of their 744's are getting awful close to that too

This topic comes up every other month. Last one was 2 months ago max. I wonder why some people are too lazy to check every recent posts.
Anyway, if it comes to flight hours the still flying early-built 744s of KLM (like PH-BFB/C/D/E) are on very top (at least no one ever came up with another proven suggestion), surpassing even the former recordholders, 2 former KLM 742SUDs flying for Southern Air towards the end.

not that many actually... very few hours actually for the number of cycles for a wide body aircraft (2.4hrs/cycle), and few hours over that life time as well... only about 5.3hrs/day

84,589 flight hours in 35,606 flight cycles

The information I gathered in the years up to now is this:

PH-BUH had 132.180 hours and 24.582 cycles in March 2009 (2 years before final flight to MHV in 2011)
PH-BUI had 132.922 hours and 23.431 cycles in September 2008 (also 2 years before final flight to MHV in 2010)

KLM's PH-BFD is the current record holder I guess; she apparently crossed 135.900 hours a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately she's also the next KLM 747 to get retired after PH-BFM, -BFO, -BFK and -BFA. She's scheduled to retire in January 2017.

PH-BFC should be somewhat less then her close relatives because she was out of use for quite some time after she went through a cloud of volcanic ash in 1989, just weeks after her delivery to KLM

There was a topic about N694SW, a 1985 737-300 that WN retired in June, which might have the cycle record.

In February, it had 97,811 hours and 67,813 cycles.

SAA's famous Lebombo, ZS-SAN was a holder once:

Image

Lebombo arrived at the then Jan Smuts airport on 6 November 1971 and now thirty-two years old in 2004 this Jumbo has clocked 20 291 cycles with 107 000 flying hours and has spent twelve and a half years airborne. Lebombo was delivered brand new to SAA in November 1971 from Boeing in Seattle at a cost of R17 million and has flown 481.5 million nautical miles or 886 million-Km using 160.5 million litres of Jet A1. Lebombo has used 3384 tyres at a cost of R10 000 each – R30.4 million - nearly double the purchase price of the aircraft. She has carried six million passengers and the world’s fleet of 1375 B747s manufactured to date have carried more than 3.5 billion passengers. Capt. Dennis Spence was but a teenager. His original first officer’s duty was a flight to London on Lebombo in 1988 and he later received his first command on the same aircraft in 1998 also to London. Weighing in at 231 metric tonnes, the Boeing 747 was extremely light, rotated at 142 knots and climbed out of JHI like a “homesick angel.” Speaking from the “sharp end”, Dennis was happy to report that every single component on the aircraft was in perfect working condition and that the acceleration was “better than an M3 on steroids.”

SAA 107,000hrs / 20,291 cycles.

Interesting LH @8.3h per flight seems to do longer legs
than SAA @ 5.45h per flight.

European legacy 744 operators have stable networks and high utilization to routes like Los Angeles and Tokyo. And their mechanics keep availability high. Those planes pile on the hours.

PH-BFD (1989 build) is currently flying over Russia on her way from AMS-PEK.

Yet in those early years we doing 12 - 14 hours a day around the bulge due to sanctions which was unheard of in those days.

That southwest 737 has an insane number of cycles per hours ratio ...

Going over N853FD a Fedex 777 delivered in 2009, as of November 2015 the Flight hours report as 252, however 3,718 cycles. Can anyone explain how this is possible?

OK, I've gone through this thread to see what the records are:
Record cycles: HA DC-9 at over 95k cycles
Record hours: KLM's PH-BFD 135.900 hours (almost 136k hours).

I would be curious to know the current record holder for major types of aircraft (hours/cycles), but that might be asking too much.

I hope this is not "too old" topic.

why 777 and a330 going to scrap so early comparing to 744 and MD11?

(from other old topic:
MD-11, Lufthansa Cargo, S/N 48413, L/N 488, D-ALCO, 139.224h 25.272cyc (31.12.2010)
)

Partly, a change in market dynamics; often an airframe is worth more in spare parts than as an operating frame, and often this decision is made by the leasing company, which was not as common in the past. (Leasing)

Also, 777 PAX frames cannot at this point be converted to freighters as they have CFRP floor beams that would all need replacing to handle cargo loads, this is not economic so off to the scrapper they go. This was not the case with MD11, 747 etc. There is a P2F programme in the pipeline for the A330 however.

Economics my friend. It's not that 777's and 330's are going to scrap so early. Heck, the first 330 and 777 are still flying in revenue service.

When the value of a plane as parts is worth more than as a plane, it'll get scrapped.

Heck, an ex UA 744 was scrapped with something like 50,000 hrs on it, maybe not even that much.

One of the 737-200s up here is still cruising around with 50,000 and change hours but over 76,000 cycles.

More likely 25,200. Maybe as low as 9,252.
