Airports with approaches in close proximity to city centers

Thu Feb 21, 2019 8:17 am

Figured it might be interesting to start a list of airports with approaches relatively close to downtown city centers and tall buildings.

Off the top off my head, I think of a few in the US. Of course there are many more globally, feel free to add them.

LGA
DCA
DAL
PHX
SAN

London City, Berlin-Tegel, Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel, Paris Le Bourget, Stockholm Bromma for starters.

An airport doesn't necessarily have to be smack dab in the middle of a city to have an impact. SEA is about ten miles from downtown Seattle, but when Columbia Center (the tallest building in the city) was proposed in the early 1980s, the FAA mandated that the height of the tower be reduced by 73 feet because of its proximity to SEA/BFI approach paths. A currently proposed, taller building nearby (4/C or 4th & Columbia Building) has been getting FAA attention recently as well.
Picked a hell of a week to quit sniffing glue.

Try Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport (CGH) - not only bang on inside Sao Paulo's Southside, it houses the Air Bridge Sao Paulo/Rio de Janeiro which is one of the busiest in the World.

Florence, Italy. When approaching from south/east and you fly low over the city. Amazing to overfly the big Duomo Cathedral, all the beautiful churches and bell towers, and the Old Bridge on a late summer's afternoon... No tall buildings there in order not to spoil the medieval and renaissance skyline though.

On a side note: the airport (virtually a city airport) is now connected to the city center by a new tram line that gets you in the center in ten minutes. Amazing stuff.

In Australia, you get an impressive view of Sydney and the harbour if you're on the left side and landing on 16R. Fairly close proximity to the city.
Also approaching Adelaide to runway 23, if you're on the left side of the plane, you can get an impressive view of the city. The approach just skims the north side of Adelaide city so even closer than SYD.

Reykjavik (RKV), the main domestic airport in Iceland, is located downtown. The approach into runway 19 goes right over the city center.

Nothing compares to taking off in an empty 757 with full thrust!

There's lots of approaches that are over a City/near tall buildings, but the special ones are where the approach is lower than the adjacent buildings, I was fortunate enough to fly into Kaitak before it closed, you looked out on peoples washing on their balconies as you flew past the blocks of flats. LCY is another example with the Eastbound approach only a few hundred metres to the side of the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf

LHR is probably one of the busiest, where for 70% of the year a/c approach at between 5500' and 3500' over large swathes of the City of London, merging from the north and south over Waterloo station or Canary Wharf. City Airport traffic also pass underneath them at 2200'

FXW too. the nothern approach goes directly over the city center
while HAM ( Fuhlsbüttel ) overlays densely populated areas but not the center directly
so you can look at the city center without creating neck problems.

While you don't get as close to Downtown/CBD as some of these other airports, when approaching MSP from the east and landing on 12L, if you are sitting on the left side you will get to see Downtown Minneapolis from three sides basically, with the closest approach being on the downwind.

Some departures tend to come closer to Downtown. Heavy departures to Europe tend to do this when departing from 30L, often flying directly above the eastern edge of Downtown as they make their turns to the east. And the HND flight often flies directly above Downtown on departure.

Fairly common here in Brazil.

Fortaleza, Recife and São Paulo-Congonhas have dense population surrounding the airport.
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.

You can call it whatever you want but as far as I’m concerned, that is the main strip. Stratosphere, Wynn, Venetian, harrahs, Bally’s, Paris, mgm grand, Tropicana. What more could you want?? That approach is amazing.

YYT approach to 34 brings the aircraft pretty close do downtown. Flights from the mainland actually fly over the city, turn around over the ocean and on the approach fly right over the Quidi Vidi lake. Passengers seated on the port side can see the Signal Hill, the harbour and the downtown. Quite nice when the weather is OK.
KSC - when landing on 19, the aircraft fly over downtown Kosice. Granted, I never landed on 19, since there is "always" some kind of northerly wind in Kosice, but it does happen. There are videos on the Youtube proving it.
