A370-double decker super bi to replace A380 ?

Sun Feb 17, 2019 6:10 am

A380 was designed to early and it seems like everybody agreed it wasn't possible to correct or NEO it. But the double decker is a smart solution for VLA , maybe a bit slimmer and with same A350 composite frame and wing, next Ultrafan A370 should be the game changer we hoped for A380. A350.2000 is not going to replace A380 nor compete with B777.10. Airbus is renewing A320, up grading A350 but they won't leave VLA, I think they dumped A380 because they want to go with a new design rather than Neo it... what do you think?

Nah.

-much more fuselage drag over single deck
-who would want it?
-single deck is much simpler construction, and will lend itself to a freight version later on.
-airport infrastructure needed for two decks.
-if Airbus wanted to NEO the A380, they would have, theres just no market.
-A350/777/787 size aircraft are the future.
-cost of designing a new aircraft without a real need.

And probably more reasons.

Unless the single-deck tube design hits airport size constraints, there is no real need to go double deck. And even then, I think manufacturers, armed with hindsight, would likely explore ovoid shapes or blended wings to make the cabin wider before stacking decks.

That is assuming there actually is a market for airplanes this size in the future.

It will be a while before anyone attempts a 600-seat frame.

Can’t we combine all these threads into a giant “Effects Of A380 line shut down” thread? How many different threads does there have to be on this?

Anet topics are starting to look like the new Disney movies.. They’re all twisted re-makes..

If you really wanna see a single engine double decker airbus, there’s a certain member who’d be happy to be a fly in that picture.

Airbus took a big gamble with the A380 and failed. I don't think they'll attempt building another aircraft anywhere near as large as the A380 again anytime soon. The airlines have spoken and they're not interested in more planes as large as the A380. Even Emirates is considering converting most of their remaining A380 orders to A350s.

I was thinking you could maybe do double deck, twin engine (HUGE engines), but it would have to be high wing. Not sure if that would be desired from a maintenance/fueling/ground handling point of view.

With what engine?

Remember, due to single-engine failure requirements, you can't just put an engine twice as powerful on and call it a day. Each engine will have to be 3 times as powerful. That's over twice as much output as the biggest GE90 or GE9X.

No freight version either?

It’s hypothetical. Call it a GE9000.

Incorrect, there is significantly less drag for a double deck fuselage (on a per passenger basis) than a single deck

I think its a wash here, no particular benefit either way

as anything other than a package freighter the double decker is less flexile due to crown space use from the main deck

was never an issue for the 747

Some designs respond better to a re-engine, whilst the A380 had some issues within its engines there are bigger more ingrained flaws in its design

be careful of predicting the future

isn't stopping the MOM :duck:

I have often wondered if there could be a place for a narrow double deck aircraft making use of the small/light packaging of a double deck design for a trunk route hauler.
3-3/3-3 12 abreast design. something the length of an A320 to give 400 seats.
