I did not see a thread going, but the top 10 busiest airports for ops has been released. ATL is no longer at the top!
The top ten ranked US airports by operations in 2018 were:
1. O'Hare, 903,747 operations
2. Atlanta (ATL), 895,502
3. Los Angeles (LAX), 707,833
4. Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), 667,213
5. Denver (DEN), 603,403
6. Charlotte (CLT), 550.013
7. Las Vegas (LAS), 539,866
8. San Francisco (SFO), 470,166
9. Houston (IAH), 488,740
10. New York (JFK), 461,054

Always amazing to me that with the runway configuration that SFO has, that it can be in any 10 busiest for ops. Hats off to ATC for being able to handle that situation.

Keep in mind there is a lot more RJ ops at ORD than ATL. I wouldn’t be surprised for ATL to keep its place as top airport by passengers.

No surprise ORD is above ATL, anybody who's visited ORD would tell you that it physically feels and looks busier. It was a matter of time before the numbers caught up.

ATL will have close to 107 million passengers for 2018, which is what ORD & MDW had combined in 2018. Yes, lots more smaller planes @ ORD vs ATL. DL’s upgauging has helped ATL soar in pax. 8K fewer aircraft operations spread over 365 days equates to 22 a day on average. But there’s a difference of almost 25 million in passenger activity between ORD & ATL, or about 2 million difference monthly. Good for ORD that UA & AA are going at each other with all of these new smaller markets, flown mostly by Regional Jets. That has been the key for ORD of late. And it’s awesome for enhancing connectivity to that hub from all sizes of markets and having stepped up competition.

Interesting. You're right; the word "Top" is not necessary at all. I think this is just a way to emphasize something, as is commonly done in TV commercials, i.e. "free gift", and other redundant terms. I'm sure the topic author didn't even think about it; it probably came out that way because we're just so used to hearing this.

It’s interesting that CLT now has more movements than SEA. I suppose AA has expanded the hub operation there as the city continues to grow, but Seattle’s importance seems like it should eclipse Charlotte’s with two hubs there. I suppose larger aircraft at SEA may have something to do with it.

Well, ORD finally took back one "busiest" title. In terms of pax it'll probably be #3 in US after ATL and LAX, though.

As amazing as that is (slightly offtopic) BOM has 320,689 movements (2017) on just ONE runway...It would be around #24 on the US list with that.

I always go by passenger count and only passenger count.
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of.

ATL has posted its 2018 totals:
Operations: 895,682, up from 880,342 (+1.74%)
Passengers: 107,394,029, up from 103,934,417 (+3.33%)
Pretty phenomenal to see that Ops only increased by 15K but Pax increased by almost 3.5M!!
