Most iconic livery?

Sat Feb 02, 2019 11:05 am

Not necessarily your favorite, but what do you guys think was/is the most iconic airline livery/brand throughout the years?

Researched a bit and no one had really discussed this before. I'll start by saying the classic AA livery. (Also, unrelated, but Delta's interim livery is completely forgotten. And for good reason.)

Emirates, you can see it at pretty any major airport and recognize it as Emirates.
Thanks and best Regards

Qantas has to be up there...instantly recognisable even outside the aviation world.

SQ I agree...and might add Thai too.

BA Landor, KLM with thick blue cheatline and polished bottom and classic Aeroflot with Soviet Union red flag on the tail and navy double cheatline.

Pan Am. In Honolulu, we still have a Pan American Building (in which I used to work... it was THE travel industry center in town even into the early 90s).

Pan Am, SQ, TG, TWA, Swissair, maybe LH.

These brands/logo are easily found on t shirt, bags, a bit like Adidas or Absolut Vodka.

I think BA Landor is in a league of its own. While there are many iconic airlines, their icon status is not much enhanced by their livery, but rather more just a correlation of being the livery of an iconic airline. BA Landor ushered in the Marshall era where BA became a world-leading airline and it was also a unique, proud, immediately recognizable livery.

Other contenders may be the old American Airlines livery and Singapore Airlines.

I'd have to agree with Pan Am. (honorable mention to Delta's 70s, 80s and early 90s - and a shout out to National's Sun logo for pure fun)

Always AA for me. The tri-colored cheatlike, the red and blue AA on the tail, and those titles with white outlines have it that neon-sign look.

I am not sure if Lufthansa screwed it up. Last week I travelled for the first time on one of their aircraft in the new livery. I think the overall appearance is pretty modern, especially compared to the old colours.

The crane on Japan Airlines was indeed classic. But changing the colours to the 'Arc of the Sun' livery was great as well, just like the makeovers of Icelandair and SAS for example. Personally I loved the red tails, maybe because they were all around when I visited Japan for the first time in 2008. I was very sad when Japan Airlines went back to the crane logo.

Pan Am
Qantas
Swissair
Alitalia
KLM
BA ...Landor
Lufthansa. ...classic
Singapore Airlines

Worth a mention Gulf Air (Tristar livery)
Air Canada...red tail white maple

Funny except for Pan Am and I suppose Swissair for obvious reasons, from the main list, if someone came from 1979 they would still recognise the airline today by it's colours even if you removed the titles from it. That is perhaps part of the secret to an iconic design.
