Attractions at Airports

Wed Jan 23, 2019 1:34 pm

Mods, please move it to a different forum if this is the wrong one.

I just saw a short report on http://www.bild.de (sorry, in German only) about attractions at airports.
https://www.bild.de/reise/fluege/fluege ... .bild.html

Two really nice ones are mentioned but there are probably many mores:

- Swimming pool at PUJ (Punta Cana):

Its not really an attraction, but i like how YVR has thematic areas throughout its airport terminals. Small aquarium, tidal beach, etc.

And the TSA security check is an attraction (security theater) at all US airports. Seeing people put their hands up when going through the scanner and watching the agents yell at passengers.

Budapest has the Budapest Aero Park beside the airport - https://www.knaviation.net/museum-budapest

Manchester has the Concorde, Trident, an Avro RJ and more which are next to the airport - https://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/at-the-airport/attractions/

Singapore has the Cactus Garden, various other gardens and the pool - http://www.changiairport.com/en/airport-experience/attractions-and-services.html

Sydney has a small Qantas Heritage Collection in the domestic terminal - https://travelupdate.boardingarea.com/heritage-collection-qantas/

Tokyo Haneda has the Japan Airlines Sky Museum beside the airport - https://allabout-japan.com/en/article/4749/

They're all pretty cool!

YHZ has a store where you can buy packaged live lobster to take as carry-on. They'll even bring it air-side for connecting passengers.

I'd rather have a pool.

ATL has multiple art installations throughout the airport.
https://www.atl.com/about-atl/airport-art-program/

There's also the Delta Flight Museum as well as the Porsche Experience right next to the airport.

All the main Japanese airports have a good variety of attractions. I've seen several weddings at HND T1. The Galaxy Hall on level 6 between the two viewing deck entrances is perfect for receptions, exhibitions and corporate meetings.
Between the two terminals at MUC, there's an open space area and often something going on there, like a music concert, sports event and exhibitions.

Unfortunately for us when we transited AMS on 1/2 and again on 1/10, the Rijksmuseum Schiphol is closed for renovations. I don't recall when the posted notice anticipated a reopening. Perhaps someone else on here has a better idea. A shame, too, we had about 4 hours to kill at AMS on 1/2, and we were looking forward to spending some of it in the museum.

Call me an old curmudgeon, but just give me a seat at the gate, a power supply, a clean restroom, and somewhere to get decent (yet reasonably priced) food.

As long as you include decent windows with little to no glare for some spotting I’m in!

Before its closure in 2006, DMK used to have an airside bar that is separate from the terminal itself..
BKK, on the other hand, has a spa lounge.

Pools at airports seem kind of silly to me. What are you supposed to do with your swim suit after you're done? I would hope that they have swim suit dryers.
