Doug and AA

Sun Jan 13, 2019 9:17 pm

It seams like AA is taking a nosedive and cant pull up! Do you think its time for some fresh new eyes and get rid of Doug? AA just gets worse and worse by the day IMO!

Getting my popcorn ready.

The average AA customer probably couldn't get rid of Dougie soon enough. For whatever reason the bean counters seem to be in love with him, despite LCC's poorly performing stock.

Curious as to what nosedive you are referring to?

While the OP is slightly sensational - the stock has tanked, and AA just forecasted RASM down again last week. Almost a year ago, we heard they were going to try and raise fares to combat rising fuel costs. Fuel ended up going back down, but it appears AA is still more than willing to get involved in crazy fare wars for one of the big 3. I see AA matching the ULCCs in a lot of markets now - it gets customers onboard no doubt, but it hits revenues and RASM pretty hard.

I don't think AA has "taken a nosedive" in a practical sense - but it certainly has been interesting to watch them move in the opposite direction of DL/UA, who appear to largely be on the up (UA) or staying hot (DL)

There doesn't seem to be must of a plan, that's for sure.

I think the system is too complicated, and a hub needs to be drawn down. ORD or PHL would be good candidates.

AA needs to think twice about adding seats to B738 and A321, the next downturn will bring drastically decrease in revenue per available seats. AA needs to rethink the reduce of J seats in its B787-8, the 20J aircraft is not suitable for Asian routes and LHR (of which they are using from ORD at this moment). A compromise of 24J version might give AA some relief in premium market pricing.

Thanks for this. I haven't followed AA too closely lately and was going to ask for more details. This helps a lot. Appreciate it.

Nor is PHL. Not a fan of PHL personally but it serve a great purpose in the combined AA.

Yeah, exactly, but no popcorn here as I don't intend to revisit this thread again because now the usual suspects will resurrect yet again, for the umpteenth time, how the PHX hub needs to be closed and move everything to LAX and DFW. As if that horse hasn't been beaten to death and the premise totally debunked.

The worst thing Doug has done was cut perks for elites. EP’s got their Systemwides cut in half and you can never use them. No other major uses 500 mile stickers and charge to upgrade mid level elites.

Yep I was in 30” pitch on the A319 to/from Colombia recent and its pretty tight. DL and AS coach is much better.

The A321 was a comfortable ride in coach but they are ruining that by also going to 30”. Even a pmUS A321 from DFW-SEA was pretty nice. The bean counters are eroding that compared to AS and DL.

If you don’t like it, don’t read it. AA is my favorite airline of the US3 but they are going downhill the most.

Telling your employees not to rebook passenger on other airlines, if needed? 30” seat pitch on 6 hour flights for a full service airline? How low is that?

Agreed...this shrinking of pitch is bordering on insane. There is a day soon coming where there will be a revolt of the top 20-30% of customers...and I know a few that are ready to dump AA for DL..Just give them one more reason and they are gone.

The list of items that just piss people off continues to grow...the seats, the service, lines on board for the lavs since they have 1 fewer than years past. Running out of food selections to buy on board..or worse..catering "forgetting" to stock the aircraft. The quality of the coffee, the lack of consistent beverage services, the attitudes of many front line employees,

There are about a dozen- 18 different things that could be done to enhance that customer experience..and yes, when the next downturn comes, AA could be sucking DL's jet exhaust.

As a former PLT I liked the 500-mile system. That way not everyone is able to freely upgrade every flight. Besides, upgrades are pretty much nonexistent on mainline flights these days. Plenty of people are paying to fly domestic F.

I would argue that the cutbacks in catering and the absolute gutting of award availability are far worse offenses.

Standard lol - you mean BA and their 8 across business class? And their $1000 fees to redeem miles? LCC is light years ahead in comparison.

AA was my favorite airline when Robert Crandall was CEO. I would now choose Delta even if I had to connect over AA nonstop.

Anyone can earn money in this environment, AA should be making way more than they are which is why the stock has taken a “nosedive”, which is the exact word in the CNBC article in post 15.

I haven’t flown one of DL’s A319s. I did fly in coach on their 737s in May and found them reasonably roomy. Are DL’s A319s also 30”?

Agree on that. The “fuel surcharge” to redeem miles is a scam IMHO. Doesn’t BA also charge for seat selection on long haul flights in coach? I don’t personally select BA when I fly to Europe.

According to seatguru, some of DL's A319's are 30" and some are 31". Same as AA and UA. Hardly a reason to fire AA's CEO.

i have absolutely no issues with AA. they have a great route network at very competitive prices. as a consumer, i'm not particular worried that their executives wont get as big a bonus this year. they're still turning a consistent profit, and will be fine. they're getting newer nicer aircraft, which is my only critique of AA. they really need to retire all teh 757s, 767s, and mds asap

Disagree. They need to keep the 757s, 767s, and S80s in service for as long as possible. Those are the only comfortable AA mainline jets left. You'd seriously ride on a MAX for 7 hours with a lav too small for the average human? Or a densified A321? Please.

Above and beyond any financial or aircraft discussions, AA doesn't seem to be able to execute. Their operational performance lags far behing the other 2 US legacy carriers. Whatever network or equipment you have is irrelevant if you can't operate it reliably.

As a frequent AA flier and AA fan, I have little complaints about their service, except the seating (hit and miss on certain flights, such as one onboard a LUS B752 w/ cramped hip room); I chose AA over others in terms of convenience flying out of my hometown in lieu of driving two hours to MCI or STL for more choices of airlines, but after a recent experience w/ WN, I have started leaning my preference more on WN for any leisure travel. This coming May, I won't be flying AA (not my choice in avoiding it altogether), but rather, I will be flying WN to LAX and OAK for leisure time in LA and to see my sister graduate from Berkeley! Right after that, I'm flying UA for the first time to EWR to see my brother graduate from NYU! Let's see how UA's service is compared to AA's and even WN's (pretty sure WN would be better, IMO)!

I'd love nothing more than for AA at ORD to take a hike, so UA can finally build up their ORD hub to ATL levels. Unfortunately, it isn't likely to happen.

Dramatic much? Since when has the S80 ever made anyone deaf? I'd much rather have a comfortable seat and a bathroom that's actually human sized. But to each their own I guess. The Dougie homers will support his nonsense no matter what.

I was going to say. That was way overstated. MD-80s aren't that bad with noise and if you sit ahead of the wing it's actually very quiet. That's not hard to do either since the wings are sort of behind center on those planes.

there is more to comfort than pitch size. being able to actually have entertainment and internet is a massive advantage to newer planes. an i personally find the seats on newer planes more comfortable as well. power outlets are another big thing, which are sorely lacking in pretty much all old planes.

Hahaha you value entertainment and internet? Then do you mind explaining to me the logic behind Dougie nixing PTVs as an amenity on the new MAX 8s? That's really conducive to being entertained isnt' it? Do you mind explaining the logic behind Project Oasis and the removal of current PTVs? Again, you value entertainment, but only without your own PTV?

The S80s all have internet AFAIK.

Yes power outlets are a thing. Of course, Dougie ripped those out of the LCC fleet too, until he realized everyone else was installing them. I wonder if he's flown DL lately? Amazing how the most profitable airline of the US3 continues to install PTVs in their aircraft, even in the A220.

having flown in a nb without the ptv, the fact that I can access all the entertainment on my oled 1440p phone w/ a pixel density of 600ppi and a 6 inch diagonal as opposed to a 480p lcd thats smaller, further away from me than my phone, and far worse quality makes me not care at all about there not being ptvs. Doug is right when he says anything they install is gonna be obsolete in a few years. i've flown delta nbs w/ ptvs, and those screens are far worse than what i carry in my pocket.

The quality of the coffee, the lack of consistent beverage services, the attitudes of many front line employees

3-5 years ago you could have written the exact same post, practically verbatim, about United. Things started changing there when Oscar Munoz and Scott Kirby came onboard. Oscar and Scott aren't perfect but they have done one hell of a job getting United back on track, and anyone who has been paying attention over the past couple of years will see that UA is handily outperforming AA in every metric. Getting rid of Jeff Smisek was the best thing that ever happened to United, maybe Doug needs to go as well.

You have hit the nail on the head, bad RM strategies, which they come from the US Airways adopted mentality of how to do Revenue Management.

AA's old RM strategy was not perfect but followed simple principles to squeeze revenue where the demand existed. AA's "new" strategy now is just to stupidly match any low fare, then yield management does not know what to do with that traffic, they get the planes full of crappy fares -> low unit revenue.

Hopefully, there will be some changes happening soon.

I couldn't disagree more. I don't watch movies on my phone, and I don't want the hassle of having to unpack and set up my laptop + wires/plugs to have to do so. With the PTV, I can be entertained and eat my BOB meal at the same time. If the other major carriers have found a way to make lots of money and still provide PTV's, why can't AA as well?
